Humidifiers

Why? Air heated by furnaces becomes dry, which provides breeding ground for pathogens, microbes and may aggravate infections. It reduces concentration and cognitive faculties, and may cause dry skin and sinuses, and irreversible damages to wooden furniture that may lose its’ luster and become brittle or even splinter in the long run. Moreover, humid air feels warmer than dry air, so you can set your thermostat back in the winter time.

What’s the ideal relative humidity (RH)? Between 40 and 60%

Is excessive humidity bad too? Yes. Itpromotes mildew, mold spores, dust mites, bacteria. Besides, it may affect the floorboards and house structure in the long run.

When will the humidifier work? Whenever the return air’s relative humidity dips below the desired RH setting during the heating season only.

Is it costly to run? Humidifiers use of electrical energy and water is minimal. The bypass type diverts some of the supply hot air back to return duct across the wetted pad.

Do they need any maintenance? Need pads changed and system inspected by the heating technician during furnace cleaning annual visit.

But I have a boiler? Then you may buy a stand-alone humidifier from a hardware store if need be.
