HRV’s & ERV’s

Why do I need those things? Indoor air is certainly more polluted than outdoor and has Carbon dioxide, pollutants (VOC’s), odors –etc. In the old days we used to crack the window open to get the fresh air in, by doing so we waste valuable energy that was used to heat or cool the indoor air.

So what are HRV’s (Heat Recovery Ventilators)?  Are often tied to the central return air duct and allow the exhaust stale air out to cool the drawn outdoor air in summer in the HRV and vice versa in winter.

And ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilators)? Do like HRV’s but additionally get rid of excess humidity in the warm air, whether extracted or drawn. So they are more efficient, yet more expensive.

Who does not need a HRV or ERV? Obviously people living in old leaky houses.
